Kunsthal Aarhus invites you to the opening of two exhibitions.
Sammy Baloji's (CD) exhibition Other Tales focuses on the unearthing of ‘other’ tales – overlooked, suppressed, forgotten – about the Democratic Republic of Congo on the world map. Baloji uses photography, installation, film-making and sculptural forms to repurpose archival materials and museum narratives – against the backdrop of past and current international exploitation of human and mineral resources in his country of origin. Other Tales unfolds its three-parted narrative over the entire lower floor of Kunsthal Aarhus. Other Tales is curated by Matteo Lucchetti and was first shown in Lunds konsthall in the spring of 2020.
Sven Augustijnen's (BE) Maps of the Middle East (1942-1969) presents maps published in the American journal Time Magazine in the period 1943 to 1969. In the exhibition, it becomes clear that even though we think that we can measure the world objectively, the map is not just a practical tool that shows us national borders, mountain formations and the oceans of the world. It is a visual symbol of the discourses and power factors that give rise to this measurement.
