Afgang 18 - SES
Det Jyske Kunstakademi

Kunsthal Aarhus presents the exhibition Afgang 18 – SES, an MFA Degree Show featuring the six artists graduating from The Jutland Art Academy in 2018.

The six graduating artists display great diversity in their approach to contemporary art – but they all share the will and courage to present works that push and prod at established sensibilities and frames of reference in our complex times.

Afgang 18 – SES explores the changes happening to the way we view and perceive images, investigating how artists can add greater nuance to our outlook on visuality and pictures. The young artists delve into historic traditions, into the evolution of imaging technology, and into how pictures can form different kind of narratives compared to words and speech.

For example, the exhibition includes works that use filmic fragments to recall lost memories, thereby creating new narratives that cut across established perceptions. Other artists in the exhibition explore the body – one work uses the body as the point of anchorage for examining how one might pave the way for new meditative and altered states of mind.

A series of works takes its point of departure in an industrial gravel pit – investigating how art can help us perceive the geological age of our planet and increase our sensibility to materials and to our surroundings in general.
